Allison Williams, the co-founder of the Social Injustice League of Norman, stood on a patch of grass in silence. She called crowd members to reflect on the meaning behind May 25, as the day marks the anniversary of George Floydâs death.  âFor almost a year, (Floydâs) family and the people that loved him were ignored. Their words and their feelings were put aside because a police officer didn t want his position taken away, and it s ridiculous that it took almost a year for his voice to be heard.â  As Norman grassroots community groups gathered during this Tuesday evening rally, Williams expressed how she has felt similarly ignored by Normanâs city council. She said, time after time, she has seen community members ask for resources âwhere people who are having mental breakdowns donât have to come in contact with intimidating people, such as the police,â without success. ....
Oklahoman Attorneys who won a free-speech challenge to the city of Oklahoma City s 2015 panhandling ordinance are seeking $1.3 million in fees for legal work conducted throughout five years of hard-fought litigation. The 2015 ordinance outlawed standing, sitting or staying on many traffic medians, with limited exceptions for such things as emergency response. The original intent was to push panhandlers off medians at busy intersections, where they sought handouts from drivers waiting at traffic lights. ....
Lars Houtsma. THOMASTON Lars Houtsma went home to the Lord on April 19, 2021. He was born April 21, 1958 in Arlington, Virginia, the son of Sara and Garry Houtsma, and moved to Thomaston, ME when he was 15 years old. He graduated from Georges Valley High School in 1977. Lars wore many different hats during his life. He enjoyed tinkering with mechanical things, and there was not an engine he couldn’t fix. He had a passion for cars, motorcycles, and driving fast. It would make him laugh to scare his sister with his driving antics. Lars helped care for his mother and father in their later years. After his parents passed, Lars took pride in presiding at the head of the table, as the family patriarch, during holiday dinners. At Christmas time his nieces would beg him to make, and look forward to, his Christmas cookies and the all-time favorite saltines, caramel and chocolate treats. ....
