Cell therapy improves outcomes for heart failure patients, clinical trial shows
A clinical trial conducted at the University of Louisville has shown for the first time that heart failure treatments using cells derived from the patient s own bone marrow and heart resulted in improved quality of life and reduced major adverse cardiac events for patients after one year.
This is a very important advance in the field of cell therapy and in the management of heart failure. It suggests that a treatment, given only once, can produce long-term beneficial effects on the quality of life and prognosis of these patients. The results pave the way for a larger, Phase 3 trial of cell therapy in heart failure. ....

Differentiating acute myocarditis from myocardial infarction (MI) requires either an invasive biopsy or cardiac MRI technology that is not always available so the possibility that a microRNA biomarker in circulating T cells could be used to confirm myocarditis is appealing.
Identifying that novel miRNA was the goal of Rafael Blanco-Dominguez, MSc, of the Vascular Pathophysiology Area, Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares in Madrid, and a team of international researchers, who started by inducing autoimmune myocarditis or myocardial infarction in mice to identify the microRNA found in Th17 cells in plasma of mice with acute myocarditis either autoimmune or virus-induced. ....

Dozens of commonly used drugs, including antibiotics, anti-nausea and anticancer medications, have a potential side effect of lengthening the electrical event that triggers contraction, creating an irregular heartbeat, or cardiac arrhythmia called acquired Long QT syndrome. While safe in their current dosages, some of these drugs may have a more therapeutic benefit at higher doses, but are limited by the risk of arrhythmia.
Through both computational and experimental validation, a multi-institutional team of researchers has identified a compound that prevents the lengthening of the heart’s electrical event, or action potential, resulting in a major step toward safer use and expanded therapeutic efficacy of these medications when taken in combination. ....
