Frontline employees will be vaccinated in coming weeks


Teachers, rescuers and policemen have now received their first vaccine dose and on Thursday (February 18), the vaccination of Defense Forces employees will start. The Ministry of Social Affairs hopes that all frontline employees who want to be vaccinated will be in the coming weeks.
Of the 2,100 employees of the Rescue Board, 69 percent have said they wish to be vaccinated and Deputy Director of the Rescue Board, Andreas Anvelt, said on Wednesday that the number will likely increase. In two days, 360 Rescue Board members will have received the first vaccine dose and private company Qvalitas has been administering the vaccinations to rescuers and policemen. ....

Sligo Leitrim Fianna Fail TD Marc Mac Sharry has said the Government should sanction a ‘special recognition’ payment to all frontline health and social care professionals together with An Garda Siochana given their extraordinary contribution throughout the ongoing pandemic.
“Our Celtic cousins in Scotland, Wales and indeed here in the North have already announcement plans to pay all £500 each,” he said.
The Public Accounts Committee member said, “for many months’ political leaders, public commentators and members of the public have rightly praised and applauded all of our caregivers and lifesavers who have put themselves in harms way. ....

As a retired nurse, I want to express my thanks and sincere admiration to all of our frontline healthcare workers as we continue to battle COVID-19. They include nurses, respiratory therapists, nursing assistants, nurse practitioners, physicians’ assistants and physicians. They work in our hospitals, nursing homes, and primary care centers as well as in the community and public health.
Although as a nation, we have faced crises in the past, there have been few that have exceeded this one in scope. In a little over a year we have surpassed the number of U.S. lives lost in all of World War II. Locally, the initial surge we faced in the spring was challenging and eye opening but nothing like what we are facing now in the Capitol Region and Mohawk Valley where our hospital and ICU beds are increasingly being filled with patients struggling with COVID. ....
