Strafford County keeps warming center open for winter storm Fosters Daily Democrat SOMERSWORTH The Strafford County extreme cold weather warming center, located at 30 Willand Drive in Somersworth, will remain open through Wednesday morning. The cities activated the facility for Thursday through Sunday nights. They announced Sunday night they will keep it open Monday and Tuesday night, too, due to ongoing life-threatening cold temperatures and because significant snowfall is expected Monday into Tuesday. The warming center will open at 5 p.m. each night and close at 8 a.m. the following morning. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the region, beginning at 3 p.m. on Monday. According to the forecast, heavy snow is expected to begin Monday evening, with total snow accumulations of up to 14 inches and wind gusts as high as 40 mph. ....
SOMERSWORTH With heavy snowfall in the upcoming week’s forecast, and public uncertainty about the future of the Tri-Cities’ emergency warming center still accumulating, the cities’ mayors say they’re firm in their commitment the facility will continue to serve the region’s increasing houseless population. Dover Mayor Bob Carrier, Rochester Mayor Caroline McCarley and Somersworth Mayor Dana Hilliard all insisted in separate interviews this past week during an eventful week for the center that the center isn’t going away and the primary criteria for its activation moving forward will be life-threatening cold. “As to how we go forward, I think whatever we’re gonna to do, we’re gonna have a way to guarantee that our folks who are not sheltered have a place to get to in freezing cold weather,” said McCarley. “Period. Credit The Shepherd’s House The Kentucky Opioid Response Effort (KORE) has announced the award of four grants to support the establishment or expansion of four Recovery Community Centers. The grants total $1.5 million to be awarded over two years. New grant recipients include Recovery Café in Lexington, Achieving Recovery Together (ART) in Winchester, and Shepherd’s House in Nicholasville. Voices of Hope (VOH) Recovery Community Center in Lexington, which had previously received KORE funding in support of its services, will receive a new round of funding to launch mobile recovery support services to more communities within the Lexington, Frankfort, and Louisville areas. ....
DOVER City police reported the death of 29-year-old Ainsley-Aude Croteau, of 5 Spring St., is suspected to be drug related. If Croteau s death is confirmed to be an overdose, it would be the city s 18th of 2020. There were nine suspected drug deaths in Dover in 2019. The Dover Police Department and the state medical examiner are investigating the death. At approximately 7:57 a.m. Dec. 12, police and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to Spring Street after Croteau was found unresponsive. Croteau was found to be deceased by the responding officers and paramedics. The cause and manner of the death will be determined by the medical examiner, police said. ....
