In celebrating World Press Freedom Day today, May 3, Malawi Media Freedom Committee has been accepted as a chapter for World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) a regional and global network of media professionals which is committed to standing for quality journalism and press freedom while respecting diversity and plurality of voices. Malawi Media Freedom Committee was formed some weeks ago at the suggestion of WAN-IFRA itself, as disclosed by current chairperson Gracian Tukula. Kambalame: Stand firmly against any sexual crimes The bodies, Media Council of Malawi (MCM), Misa Malawi and Association of Women in Media (AWOME) have made the call in a joint statement. “MCM, Misa Malawi and AWOME value the rule of law and stand firmly against any sexual crimes and abuses against girls and women, and will always stand on the side of justice. “We, therefore, call upon the police to conduct their investigations and take the necessary steps or action based on their findings,” reads the statement signed by chairpersons for the three organisations thus Teresa Ndanga, Wisdom Chimgwede and Edyth Kambalame respectively. ....
Malawi Media Mourn Rev Patrick Semphere; Kenny Klips Reverend Patrick Semphere - file photo Media Council of Malawi (MCM) and Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) – Malawi have expressed sadness on the death of media champions, Reverend Patrick Semphere and Kenny Wako, AKA Kenny Klips. Reverend Semphere and Wako died Thursday morning, January 21, 2020 in Lilongwe and Blantyre respectively. Semphere succumbed to Covid-19 at Bwaila Hospital Isolation Centre in Lilongwe while Wako died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre after battling an illness for some months. Reverend Semphere moderated 2019 and 2014 Malawi Presidential Debates, was a trustee of MCM and chairperson of Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC). ....
