Malawi media joins World Association of News Publishers on World Press Freedom Day


Its role is to bring local media professionals together to find common solutions.
In celebrating World Press Freedom Day today, May 3, Malawi Media Freedom Committee has been accepted as a chapter for World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) a regional and global network of media professionals which is committed to standing for quality journalism and press freedom while respecting diversity and plurality of voices.
Malawi Media Freedom Committee was formed some weeks ago at the suggestion of WAN-IFRA itself, as disclosed by current chairperson Gracian Tukula.

Tukula leads the committee of Mbauwo Chavula as secretary, Josephine Phumisa as treasurer with other members being Francis Tayanjah Phiri, Emmanuel Chibwana, Chisomo Ngulube and Habiba Osman. ....

Better Perks Vital for Corruption Fight in Media

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi has challenged media houses to begin paying journalists well in an attempt to fight corruption in the country.
MISA Malawi Chairperson, Teresa Ndanga, says most journalists are tempted to fall into bribery because they are lowly paid.
She said this on Wednesday when Wits University and Continuing Journalism Education virtually launched the State of Newsroom for Malawi 2019-20 report.
However, Ndanga implored on journalists to personalize the effect of corruption on people for them to demand accountability from public officers.
“They must be told the need for them to demand information using the Access to Information law. We have become part of the problem,” she said. ....

Veteran journalist Limbani Moya no more


Veteran journalist Limbani Moya, who was working at Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) as Broadcasting Monitoring Officer, has died at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre of CoVID-19 complications.
MACRA’s Communications Manager Clara Ngwira confirmed of the death and said the late Moya’s remains is expected to be taken from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for his residence at Namiyango in Bangwe Township tomorrow (Friday) and thereafter his burial at HHI Cemetery in Blantyre.

Close family sources say sadly, he has died a day after returning from India where he had a successful kidney transplant. He was discharged from the Indian hospital on Tuesday, March 20 and arrived back home in Malawi on Wednesday, April 12. ....
