Newspaper headlines from over 100 years ago showing anti-Asian rhetoric and policies in America flashed across the screen. A minute later, television news reports from the past year about violence and harassment against Asian-Americans echoed the messages from nearly a century ago.
The scene shifted to the voices of a dozen Asian and Pacific Islander students at Stony Brook University. “I have been discriminated against,” one student said, “I have been verbally harassed,” said another.
“Because of my racial identity,” they said in unison.
Even more voices flooded the presentation, this time expressing words of solidarity with the students and other victims of harassment and violence. ....

Five new college presidents reflect on their first years in pandemic

Keeping students and employees safe and their institution afloat through the past year was the top priority for most first-year college presidents who stepped into their roles right before or during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Retired U.S. Air Force colonel Mark Anarumo, president of Norwich University, a military college in Northfield, Vt., said he also put his goals for the university on the back burner. So did Laura Walker, president of Bennington College in Vermont; Kenneth Daly, president of St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y.; and Maurie McInnis, president of Stony Brook University in New York. Each stepped into their respective presidencies between February and August of last year. ....

Stony Brook University Receives $5M to Support Offshore Wind Research |

Joint venture partners Ørsted and Eversource developers of New York’s offshore wind farm, Sunrise Wind have launched a research partnership with Stony Brook University. The $5M commitment funded by the project will underwrite research initiatives specific to the advancement of offshore wind through Stony Brook’s Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC) in connection with the Sunrise Wind Project.

The AERTC, a New York State Center of Excellence in Energy, is a true partnership of academic institutions, research institutions, energy providers and industrial corporations.
