The message reads as follows: Dear members of the Stony Brook family: One year ago, our school, community, and world were shaken by the coronavirus pandemic. It was a period of great fear and anxiety; there was still so much we didn’t know about this disease from how it was transmitted to how to best protect ourselves, from all its specific early symptoms to exactly what we’d call it. But in the midst of these extraordinary times, the faculty and staff at Stony Brook have given a truly extraordinary response. You stepped up to maintain our institution’s mission. And now, at the start of March 2021, it is worth reflecting on all we have accomplished together over the past 365 days. ....

Andrew Cuomo’s proposed fiscal year 2021-22 state budget, which is contingent on $15 billion of federal support. New York state’s revenue has suffered an estimated $19.7 billion reduction since the coronavirus pandemic, Cuomo said in his budget address on Jan. 19. In the worst case scenario, the state would only receive $6 billion in federal relief, which would force the state to make further budget cuts. Under Cuomo’s proposal, higher education would receive around $11.1 billion, a 9.2% reduction from the previous fiscal year when adjusting for inflation. ....

Goldbart is slated to assume his new position on March 22. Goldbart is currently dean of the College of Natural Sciences, Robert E. Boyer Chair and Mary Ann Rankin Leadership Chair at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). As the chief academic officer at Stony Brook, Goldbart will be responsible for overseeing the university s academic mission; directly supervising all academic units; support services and operations, including enrollment management and student success; and coordinating all academic programs. EMMA HARRIS/STATESMAN FILE After nearly 11 years as Dean of Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine and Senior Vice President of Health Sciences, Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky will be retiring from the university at the end of the academic year. According to a statement to faculty and staff on Jan. 4 from President Maurie McInnis, Kaushansky will exit his role as dean on Jan. 31 and remain senior vice president until the end of the spring semester. Kaushansky joined Stony Brook in June 2010, and has been in charge of overseeing both medical schools and the university hospital system that is spread throughout Suffolk County. ....
