Shina Abubakar – Osogbo Wife of Osun State Governor, Mrs Kafayat Oyetola has described abuse of insecticide-treated nets by households as a setback in the battle to eliminate malaria in the state.
Mrs Oyetola, who was represented by the Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs Olubukola Olaboopo at the 2021 World Malaria Day held at Palace Square, Iragbiji, stressed the need for proper use of the net in order to achieve zero malaria level in the state.
“Ongoing efforts to combat malaria include the use of insecticide-treated nets to prevent mosquito bites. These nets have been given to our people free through the support of the government and our developmental partners, mainly the Global Fund since 2013. The nets are provided through periodic mass campaigns and through routine distribution to pregnant women and fully immunized children. ....

Pharmaceutical company, Novartis, has called for increased leadership commitment towards the prevention and treatment of malaria.
The company, in a statement issued to mark World Malaria Day, said although the disease was preventable and curable, millions of children died each year from it.
“Leaders must reinforce their commitments in drawing the line against this preventable and treatable disease in achieving a malaria-free world because the patient cannot wait,” the statement, titled, “No one should die of malaria” said.
World Malaria Day, marked each year on April 25, is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained commitment towards malaria prevention and control. ....

Step up effort to fight against malaria - AMMREN

The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) has urged all stakeholders to step up the fight against malaria.
It said it was acceptable that thousands of people, mainly children and pregnant women continue to die needlessly of a disease that could be prevented and treated.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by the Executive Secretary of AMMREN, Dr Charity Binka, to mark this year’s World Malaria Day said over the past two decades, great progress had been made in the malaria fight, saving more than seven million lives and preventing over one billion new malaria cases.
The statement said in 2019, the global tally of malaria cases were 229 million and the disease claimed some 409 000 lives in 2019 compared to 411 000 in 2018. The African Region for its part continues to shoulder more than 90 per cent of the overall disease burden. Since 2000, the region has reduced its malaria death toll by 44 per cent, from an estimated 680 000 to 384 000 annuall ....
