Last week, Nigeria joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Malaria Day and World Immunisation week.
The commemoration was done amidst the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed over 3 million lives globally and over 2,000 lives in Nigeria.
As Nigeria continues to record few new COVID-19 cases, the fatality from the virus has also declined with only two deaths recorded in the last 18 days.

World Malaria Day: How Chevron Nigeria Limited supports the fight against malaria
“Defeating malaria is absolutely critical to ending poverty, improving the health of millions, and enabling future generations to reach their full potential.”
This statement by Tedros Adhanom, Director-General, World Health Organization (WHO), depicts the relevance of the fight against malaria, a disease that continues to devastate the world population.
According to WHO, in 2019, an estimated 229 million cases of malaria and 409,000 deaths from malaria occurred worldwide.
Children under 5 years of age are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; in 2019, they accounted for 67% (274,000) of all malaria deaths worldwide. Nigeria accounted for 23% of all malaria deaths worldwide. ....

Ecobank Supports National Malaria Control Programme To Fight Malaria In Africa


 
The Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, Mr Daniel Sackey at the official press briefing of the 2021 World Malaria Day held on April 28, 2021, at the Ecobank Head Office auditorium under the theme “Zero Malaria, Draw the line against Malaria” said that it is an opportunity to evaluate the progress made so far.
According to him, Ecobank being a financial institution that is keen on impacting positively the health of people living in the communities it operates has partnered with the National Malaria Control Programme as it leads the fight towards the elimination of this endemic disease.
Addressing the stakeholders at the press briefing, Mr Sackey said that World Malaria Day affords the stakeholders in the fight against malaria the opportunity to evaluate their progress and strengthen their resolve in the fight against the disease that remains the highest cause of morbidity in Ghana. ....

Malaria kills 300,000, afflicts 100m yearly in Nigeria


AHAPN alerts to rising resistance of malaria parasite to ACTs, mosquitoes to insecticides
Urges institutes to intensify research into discovery, production of new medicines
Pharmacists under the aegis of the National Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria (AHAPN) have warned that rising resistance of mosquitoes to available insecticides and the malaria parasite to the drug of choice, Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT), are threatening efforts to ensure that the country eliminates malaria by 2025.
They said malaria-related absenteeism and production losses cost Nigeria close to an estimated $1 billion (N482 billion) loss yearly.
