Gig Harbor Picks New Fire Chief

GIG HARBOR, WA Gig Harbor has chosen its next Fire Chief.
Dennis Doan, the former Fire Chief for the Boise Fire Department, will be the next man to lead Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One. According to the fire department, Doan served Boise Fire for 29 years, 12 as its Fire Chief. He also founded and helmed the Southwest Idaho Fire & EMS Chiefs Association.
Gig Harbor Fire had previously narrowed the field of Fire Chief candidates to just three: Doan, Dan Bjurstrom and Todd Meyer. Both Bjurstrom and Meyer currently work for Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One: Bjurstrom is the department s Assistant Chief of Finance and Administration, Meyer is the Assistant Chief of Operations. ....

In a deep and dark December, an eagerly awaited event brightened the early morning in a UW Medicine loading zone. The first shipment of COVID-19 vaccinations had arrived.
The 3,900 doses had been marked priority boarding for their FexEx flight to Seattle, after being trucked in insulated, dry ice containers out of a Pfizer BioNTech facility in the upper Midwest. ....

Homeless for the holidays


JONESBORO — Around 5 a.m. Wednesday, Earl Long could be seen pushing his old shopping cart up Main Street. The cart is covered in cardboard signs stating, “NEED DONATIONS, ANYTHING WILL HELP, NOT HOMELESS.”
Long, 54, of Jonesboro, just found a place on Gee Street after spending many weeks on the street with his 32-year-old autistic wife, Stephanie.
“I am from Wisconsin,” Long said. “I got stuck here when I got pulled over after putting flowers on my dad’s grave. I was here 30 minutes when I got pulled over and spent two days in jail. They impounded my car.”
Long said his wife spent several days walking the street before being taken in by a stranger. When he was finally released from jail, he said he was able to locate his wife by calling her phone. ....

Martha “Marty” McLaren, a past West Seattle/South Park representative on the
Seattle Public Schools Board of Directors, has died. Ms. McLaren, a Puget Ridge resident, was 76 years old. She was a longtime educator and community advocate, but her highest-profile role was that of board member. She won election in 2011 by unseating incumbent
Steve Sundquist and then four years later was unseated herself by current board member
Leslie Harris. We talked with Ms. McLaren after her election in 2011; she spoke of her teaching career following her involvement with advocacy as a PTA leader while her children were in school. More details on her life are in her obituary, which we’ve just received: ....
