Elizabeth Wolford made history in this region when she was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the United States Senate in 2013 as the first woman to serve as district judge in the Western District of New York.
And now Wolford, 54, is again blazing a trail as she is set to become the chief judge of the district, which includes the state s 17 westernmost counties. She will become the first woman to serve in this role in any part of the state outside of New York City.
Wolford replaces U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci Jr., who was also appointed by Obama in 2013 and has served as chief judge since 2015. She will remain in the position for seven years. ....

A regional chief judge in New York has stepped down from his administrative role because of a photo of himself at a Halloween party in 1988.
Craig Doran, the chief judge of the region that includes Rochester, New York, said in a statement he appeared in the photo as a “well-known public figure of color,” report the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Syracuse.com and WXXI News.
The stories say it’s unclear which public figure he portrayed.
Doran will continue to serve as an elected judge. He was elected to a 10-year term to the trial-level supreme court in 2015 and previously served as a judge for Ontario County, New York. ....

A former New York administrative judge resigned and apologized Friday over a Halloween costume he wore in 1988 of “a well-known public figure of color,” according to a press release.
Former administrative judge Craig Doran said he resigned as administrative judge for the Rochester region when a photo from a Halloween party reportedly was circulated. The statement didn’t say who Doran dressed up as.
“I did not comprehend at the time the hurtful nature of my actions,” Doran said in a statement. “I know now that an act of this nature is considered to be racist. I can assure you that this event in 1988 in no way reflects my beliefs and principles.” ....
