New Zealanders endured plenty of weather extremes across the country last month with a warmer and drier than normal April for many.
April was persistently dry, with well below normal rainfall levels in eastern parts of both islands and the central North Island, Niwa s monthly climate summary reported.

Silver Fern great and former Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic netball coach Margaret Forsyth has died at the age of 59.
Forsyth was the youngest Silver Fern to play at a netball World Cup, selected as just a 17-year-old for the tournament in 1979.
Following her playing career, Forsyth served in the Police force as well as three terms as a Hamilton City councillor, while also coaching the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in 2017 and 2018.

Heavy industry contaminants have not been detected in drinking water or hangi pit soils around Whareroa Marae following initial sampling, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council said today.
Last month the council confirmed it was investigating reports PFAS compounds had been recorded in groundwater in Mount Maunganui s industrial area, on a site near the marae. It became aware of this following receipt of a consent application where PFAS was identified as part of the supporting contaminated land assessment.
PFAS are a large group of man-made compounds that are widely used globally in a range of consumer and industrial applications. ....
