Press Release – Hamilton City Council Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate and her colleagues have paid warm tributes to Councillor Margaret Forsyth who died today. Councillor Forsyth was serving her third term as a Hamilton City Councillor. She first served from 2010 – 2016 and was elected again in 2019. During this term she was Chair of Council’s Environment Committee. As well as her community work, Forsyth was well-known throughout New Zealand as part of the Silver Ferns Netball World Championship team in 1979 and 1987. She played goal attack in 64 international tests before turning her attention to family, and later coaching. In July last year, she attended an investiture ceremony in Auckland where she officially became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to netball and the community. ....

Forsyth was the youngest Silver Fern to play at a netball World Cup, selected as just a 17-year-old for the tournament in 1979. Following her playing career, Forsyth served in the Police force as well as three terms as a Hamilton City councillor, while also coaching the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in 2017 and 2018. Tuesday, 4 May 2021, 2:07 pm Netball New Zealand is today paying tribute to one of the greats of the game following the passing of former Silver Fern Margaret Forsyth. The gifted shooter was selected for the Silver Ferns in 1979, as a 17-year-old, and went on to earn 64 Test caps in a career that included three Netball World Cup appearances, winning the coveted title in 1979 and 1987. Forsyth was Silver Fern number 66. She made her debut as a teenager against the Jamaican Sunshine Girls and became part of a formidable shooting combination with another rising shooter of the time, Margharet Matenga – the pair dubbed the two Margs. ....
