Cabinet Meets in Marathon Session to Review Union’s Counterproposal
The Briceño administration met in an all-day session today at the House of Culture in Belize City where a cabinet meeting was convened. There were a number of pressing issues that were brought up for discussion, including the pending 2021 budget and the proposed ten percent salary reduction for teachers and public officers. The meeting concluded around five-thirty this evening after which the ministers filed out of the compound without granting interviews to the media. In passing, Prime Minister Briceño indicated that he will not comment on the situation with the unions until the negotiations have been successfully concluded. To reiterate, the Joint Unions Negotiating Team has remained firm in its objection to government’s proposed wage cuts, presenting counterproposals of its own which cabinet reviewed today. ....

Foreign Ministers of Belize and Guatemala Meet at Office of the Organization of American States in the Adjacency Zone

The claim by Guatemala to Belize’s territory, islands, and seas is before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). However; for the time being, both Belize and Guatemala are now discussing areas of cooperation and other concerns.
Hon. Sen. Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration of Belize, and H.E. Pedro Brolo Vila, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guatemala, met on Thursday at the Office of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the Adjacency Zone. It was the first meeting between the two foreign ministers since they assumed their respective posts.
The two foreign ministers exchanged updates in the efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Belize and Guatemala and agreed to reactivate the Belize-Guatemala Joint Commission. ....

According to Senator Eamon Courtenay, who represents both the People’s United Party and Government Business, any programs created would be for limited duration, with permission of the Minister of finance. According to Courtenay, clause sixty-six is not designed to assist any particular business or entity. Like Prime Minister Briceño, Senator Courtenay stressed the purpose of the bill is to provide liquidity to the system, not to aid a failing financial company.
