Rehoboth Beach commissioners have loosened the city’s mask wearing regulations to reflect the state’s current guidelines. However, with a decision deadline just weeks away, city staff has also recommended the July 4 fireworks be cancelled. During a special meeting May 11, City Manager Sharon Lynn made the recommendation, saying it would be nearly impossible to meet the guidelines required for events larger than 250 people. She said Police Chief Keith Banks and Lt. Jamie Riddle also thought it was in the best interest of the city to not hold the fireworks. Commissioners Pat Coluzzi and Richard Byrne said they supported the city manager making a decision that was in the best interest of the city. ....
Despite a recent change to federal guidance suggesting face masks aren’t needed for fully vaccinated people outside, the mandate requiring face masks in all of Rehoboth Beach’s public space still stands. During a special meeting April 27, city commissioners scheduled an emergency meeting for April 29 to discuss possible changes to the city’s mask mandate. That action came in response to updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that fully vaccinated individuals can visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing, and they can also participate in outdoor activities and recreation without a mask, except in certain crowded settings and venues. The meeting was also scheduled in anticipation of an April 28 town hall meeting with Gov. John Carney. ....

Rehoboth Beach Mayor Stan Mills confirmed Buckson’s resignation and said his departure was solely his decision. “Kent Buckson submitted his resignation as captain of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol Dec. 18, effective immediately,” said Mills, in an email Dec. 20. “Kent indicated that he has served on the RBP for 34 years. I accepted his resignation and thanked him for his years of service to the city.” Buckson’s resignation comes on the heels of his filing an appeal with city commissioners Oct. 27, questioning City Manager Sharon Lynn’s ability to delegate her responsibility for one department to another department. ....
