This week, teachers in Iredell County and throughout the state will become eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. Gov. Roy Cooper recently announced that North Carolina K-12 and childcare teachers will be prioritized at the front of the line in the state s upcoming expansion of vaccine eligibility to frontline essential workers. Educators and school personnel will be eligible to receive the vaccine Feb. 24, with additional frontline essential workers added to the eligibility list on March 10. ....
North Iredell High is in the North Carolina town of Olin. Iredell-Statesville Schools is getting money to boost energy efficiency in all schools and improve air quality in the oldest ones. School district officials and Iredell County commissioners say they’ll take out almost $9 million in loans to carry out a plan that Superintendent Jeff James presented this week. It calls for putting LED lighting into all 40 schools. That’s expected to save at least $500,000 a year on power bills. Upgrading heating and air conditioning systems at two schools is expected to save additional money. The district will also install bipolar ionization air filtration systems at 20 of the oldest schools. The new filtration systems are considered a tool to improve health conditions by deactivating harmful substances like airborne mold, bacteria, allergens and viruses. ....

Lauren Welch’s history classes at the Agriculture Science Early College (ASEC) wrote Christmas cards to those actively serving in the US Armed Forces. Mrs. Welch decided on this project because she felt that there is much to be thankful for in spite of the difficulties of 2020. She said “It’s been a challenging semester for everyone, but taking a few moments to practice gratitude and remembering that we still get to spend the holidays with our families thanks to the service of others is what we needed to finish out the year.” Lily Warren, a student, helped in the effort. She said, “I think this is a great idea because these people do so much to serve our country and this was the least we could do to try and brighten up someone’s day.” ....
