After not being able to open the public pool last summer because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is planning a comeback this summer.
A full comeback, though, will require a lot more lifeguards. The city needs to hire about 100 more lifeguards to open all areas of both the indoor and outdoor pools safely. Roger Steinbrock, who oversees the Parks and Rec marketing division, said the department was working to get enough staff to open all areas of the Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Kentucky St.
“I just want the community to know that we want the pool open too,” Steinbrock said. “We want to provide fun for the community; that’s what summer is all about and what Parks and Recreation is all about.” ....

Perhaps it is fitting that what led to the creation of a city department whose business includes organizing games, hanging holiday lights and planting flowers was actually the community’s hardship.
In the late 1930s, Lawrence, like the rest of the country, was still in the midst of the Great Depression, and while the adults worked longer hours and dealt with the struggles of the time, the activities that once entertained the children had become scarce.
“All of these organized activities that would have occupied young people, scouting trips, outings and hikes, they weren’t happening as much,” said Watkins Museum of History Curator and Collections manager Brittany Keegan. “So what the city started noticing was groups of kids around without an activity.” ....

Edward, who did not want to use his last name, said that when he checked into the city’s hotel shelter program this winter it was the first time he’d had four walls and a door since at least 2005. An older man with a wiry white and gray beard poking out from his mask, Edward said he’d been living in his truck when he had a stroke in early February, and it was someone at the hospital who told him about the program. ....

Lawrence will be spending another $90,000 on a program to house homeless people in hotels amid frigid winter temperatures.
At its meeting Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission voted unanimously to approve the additional spending for the program, for which demand has more than doubled over the past two weeks as extreme cold has gripped northeast Kansas. The city has now spent $340,000 in total on the program, and commissioners expect the new funding to keep the program operating through the first week of March. ....
