Fran Janczak pulled up to Orange Hat Publishing in Waukesha, manuscript in hand and nerves in her stomach. Janczak had the desire to write a children’s book for years and finally buckled down and did it in 2016. Now, she was nervous to unbuckle her seatbelt and go inside to present her work to a professional. Thoughts of whether her friends and family had been honest or simply kind ran through her mind. “I was afraid of rejection,” she said. “I was nervous, but I drove out and thought it’s now or never.” She said the Orange Hat Publishing website allowed a writer to submit a story online or suggested they stop in to say hello. However, once Janczak made it inside the owner who happened to be up front asked for more than a greeting. ....
VICTORIA An elementary school in Nanaimo is reporting a COVID-19 exposure, becoming the fourth school in the city to issue such an alert since March 1. Island Health says exposures to the coronavirus were reported at Mountain View Elementary school on March 2 and 3. The school joins Bayview Elementary, Nanaimo District Secondary and Wellington Secondary, which all reported COVID-19 exposures in the first three days of the month. Mountain View Elementary previously reported a COVID-19 exposure on Feb. 16. There are currently 15 Vancouver Island schools on the health authority’s COVID-19 exposure list. When there is an exposure in an island school, health officials contact everyone who may have been at risk directly and instruct them to self-isolate or monitor for symptoms as necessary. ....
VICTORIA Multiple schools on Vancouver Island are reporting new COVID-19 exposures this week. Three schools in Nanaimo – Bayview Elementary, Nanaimo and District Secondary and Wellington Secondary – all reported exposures to the virus on both March 1 and 2. Khowhemun Elementary in Duncan is also reporting exposures on those days, while Quamichan Middle School in Duncan had an exposure on March 2 only. Oceanside Elementary in Parksville is reporting a new exposure for March 1, after earlier reported exposures on Feb. 26 and 26. There are currently 18 Vancouver Island schools on the Island Health exposure list. VANCOUVER Island Health has added two more schools in Nanaimo to its online list of COVID-19 exposures, bringing the total number of schools with recent coronavirus cases in the city to six. The two most recent additions in Nanaimo are Nanaimo District Secondary School - which had exposures on Jan. 27 and 28, as well as Feb. 1 through 3 - and Brechin Elementary School, which had an exposure on Feb. 1. The other four schools in Nanaimo with recent exposures are John Barsby Community, Rock City Elementary, Qwam Qwum Stuwixwulh and Bayview Elementary. Dates for all of the recent exposures in the Island Health region can be found on the health authority s website. ....
