We are joining you live from the auditorium of the state Historical Society in iowa and we are in des moines. With us today are more than 200 students from schools across this state, we are joined online by students in classrooms across the country. Say hello everybody. applause in december 1965 mary beth and john tinker along with their friend Chris Eckhart wore black bands to school to protest the war in vietnam they were sent home and suspended from school. The students were told they couldnt return to school until they agreed to end their protest. Through their parents, the Students School sued the School District for violating their right to free expression. Culminated in the Supreme Court decision 15 years ago on february 24th, 1960, nine the court ruled seven to two that students do not shed their Constit

She worked on the team that determined the path that parts of the saturn 5 would take if the rocket fell back to earth. They work was vital for safety planning. In history. So, theyre going into archives, into museums, into libraries and theyre sifting through primary sources, secondary sources. And then theyre thinking critically about that and why their topic was important in history as related to an annual theme. This year the theme is triumph and tragedy in history. And then they present their findings in different formats. Of course, one of the categories you see right behind me, and thats the exhibit category. And then theres also a paper category and dramatic performance, documentary, or website. So, history day gives kids an opportunity to be creative in the way in which they present their information. So, for performance category, first they have to do their research. Good, Solid Research into primary and secondary sources. Going into the museums. Lets say its a civil rights topic and theyre going to find someone to do an interview with. Basically the research that historical quality, the information and the evidence. Thats everyone h

Announcer we continue our look at rapid city with a visit to bear butte, a place considered sacred by numerous native americans in the region. [flute music] i am donovan sprague. My lakota name comes from the crazy horse family of the lakota, for my tribal affiliation from Cheyenne River sioux reservation, which is about 100 miles east of where i stand right now at the sacred bear butte. A very spiritual place where not only lakota, but people of Many American Indian Tribes and nationalities visit. People come here and they will give tobacco offerings and prayers, and so they will leave those very often with tobacco and cloth for maybe a loved one or something they are praying for, but it does show all of the prayers that are left here and that are well received in this very area that we are at, i have actually given some lakota names to some people here. Some of these places, when i just look over, i can kind of almost imagine us, you know, having our little ceremony and getting toget
