Douglas Strachan, 75, of Rio Verde passed away peacefully on July 15, 2021, with family at his side. Doug was born on Nov. 24, 1945, to Alvin (Pinky) and Joyce Strachan. He grew up on the family farm in Castle Rock, Minn. He graduated from Northfield High School in 1963. He played football, basketball and baseball and summer baseball in the D.R.S. league. He attended Mankato State College for one year.
Doug married Phyllis Fredrickson in 1964 and they had two sons, Steve (Sue) and Jim (Maren). Doug and Phyllis were married for 18 years. In 1984 Doug married Pat Rice.
He started his career at General Mills, who sent him to Control Data Institute. That led to a successful career in information technology that spanned four decades. He worked with several companies including EMR Computing, Cytrol Inc., Shearson Lehman Hutton, US Bank and Dain Rauscher/RBC before retiring in 2002.

Rice County Fair Outstanding Senior Citizen Honored
The Rice County Fair 2021 Outstanding Senior Citizen Award was announced today on Senior Day at the 148th Annual event.
I ve had the honor of hosting the program for a number of years and meeting the outstanding recipients. This year s recipient is from Faribault.
Lawrence Borst Senior, 85, has been an exceptional volunteer according to a number of organizations.
He told us he started volunteering at St. Vincent De Paul Center after his wife passed away in 2012. He started working 4 days a week and currently works 3 days a week.
Paradise Center for the Arts is another non-profit Borst has worked with for the past 15 to 20 years. Now they simply call whenever they need him for various volunteer efforts.

Palm Coast’s six candidates for mayor gathered Monday evening for the last and most-attended forum ahead of the July 27 special election. The election has been well under way, with voting by mail started weeks ago and early voting starting last Saturday. As of today, 10,000 ballots had already been cast, most by mail, representing 14 percent of the electorate.
The forum was held at the Buddy Taylor Middle School cafeteria, was sponsored by the News-Journal, and moderated by Pat Rice, the paper’s editor. It was revelatory in small ways. With several previous forums’ practice behind them, the six candidates–David Alfin, Kathy Austrino, Carol Bacha, Doug Courtney, Alan Lowe and Cornelia Manfre–were comfortable and at times on auto
