More news and features in your Sunday News-Journal

More news and features in your Sunday News-Journal If there s one thing we enjoy, it s the opportunity to give News-Journal readers more. So it s a particular pleasure to let you know about a variety of added content in today s News-Journal. All of it will be in your Sunday print newspaper going forward. But first, let me share why we ve added this new content.  It s no secret that newspapers are in the midst of an evolution. At the beginning of my journalism career in the 1980s, our only product was printed on a press and delivered to doorsteps in every neighborhood and down every country road.

The return of the cannon

The return of the cannon 50 years on from our momentous 1970/71 league and FA Cup double, we’re proud to present a new away kit inspired by the strip worn by our heroes. The yellow shirt with a blue trim features the return of the icon that unites us all – the famous Arsenal cannon – in place of our club crest. The new kit for the 2021/22 season will be worn for the first time by Arsenal Women in their Vitality Women s FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace on Sunday, May 16. The men’s team will also wear the new kit in their final away fixture of the season – also against Crystal Palace – on Wednesday, May 19.

Big interview: Pat Rice

Very few people in the history of the game know the feeling of winning the league and FA Cup double in English football.  Fewer still have experienced winning it more than once, as both a player and a coach, in different generations.  But Pat Rice belongs to that most exclusive of clubs. Having joined us as an apprentice aged 15, his breakthrough in the first team came five years later, when he became a regular at right back at the start of the 1970/71 season. A fully committed, whole-hearted defender, he missed just one game all campaign, forming part of a miserly back four that conceded only 29 games from 42 league games.

The First Amendment is not a license for bad behavior

The First Amendment is not a license for bad behavior I ve spent my journalism career embracing the First Amendment. I believe it s the right that most distinguishes our soul as a country. Here s what it says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.   In 45 words, our forefathers protected our right to think and speak and believe. If a more important sentence has been published, I haven t seen it.

Volusia Realtors cheer $300,000 homes; workers, not so much

A little more than a week ago came news that the median home price in the Daytona Beach area surpassed $300,000 for the first time ever. It s amazing, said John Adams, president of Adams Cameron & Co. Realtors. The real estate market is through the roof, no question about it.   Realtors are understandably happy about the higher prices. But for average workers in Volusia and Flagler counties, the American dream of home ownership is ever more out of reach.  Business Editor Clayton Park s story about the climbing prices for homes explained the conditions that are leading to the boom. Namely, a lot of people with money to spend are moving to Volusia and Flagler counties, many of them retirees from up north seeking their slice of Florida paradise. Low interest rates are also fueling the boom. And although interest rates will likely go up by the end of this year, no one expects the higher rates to greatly slow real estate sales here.
