Harry Reid International Airport? Not quite yet. Jeff Gillan UP NEXT
What the airport told me today is the name change request has completed the initial processing steps. What that means is pilots now see aviation maps that say Harry Reid international.
According to the FAA, it s finished updating aeronautical charts, publications, and pilot notices.
In February, the Clark County Commission voted unanimously to rename America s 9th busiest airport. Since 1948, it had been named after Nevada s Pat McCarran, an aviation supporter, but who, according to critics, was racist and anti-Semitic. Harry Reid International will honor our former us senator and the former Senate majority leader.
Federal officials still have not weighed in on changing the name of McCarran International Airport near the Las Vegas Strip to honor former US Sen. Harry Reid (D), a Clark County spokesman said.

Erik Pappa, Clark County’s director of communications, told

County Commissioner Tick Segerblom posted tweets on Wednesday with updated information about the name change.

A new name for one of the country s busiest airports is getting ready to take flight.
McCarran Airport in Las Vegas will become Harry Reid Airport after a unanimous vote by the Clark County Commission earlier this year.
The FAA, which doesn t regulate airport names, still must complete administrative tasks to reflect the change. The three-letter code that the FAA uses to identify the airport, LAS, will remain.
Another factor that could delay implementation: Airport officials estimate that rebranding will cost from $5 million to $7 million, according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal story. The commission s vote requires that private donations pay for the name change.
