(CNN) It s a good bet that folks who fly to Las Vegas regularly are probably used to the name McCarran International Airport even if they re not sure where the name comes from. But they might soon be getting used to a new name when they travel there.
The Clark County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday voted in favor of renaming McCarran International Airport after Harry Reid, the powerful Democrat who served Nevada in the US Senate for decades, including a stint as majority leader from 2007 to 2015.
In an announcement on Twitter, the commissioners said they have unanimously approved a resolution requesting the name of @LASairport be changed to Harry Reid Int l Airport. The request will go to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Clark County Commission voted Tuesday to approve the change. The airport’s staff will now apply to the Federal Aviation Administration for a formal name change, a process that is expected to take months to finalize.

“You name things in your community after people that represent your community, and to me Sen. Reid embodies the American dream. He came from nothing and became one of the most powerful people in the world,” said Commissioner Ross Miller, who said Mr. Reid embodies that dream “maybe more so than anybody else in the history of this country.”
“That’s the story we want to tell. That’s what we want everybody who comes into Las Vegas to see,” Mr. Miller said.
Mr. Reid himself had pushed for years to remove McCarran’s name, regularly railing to reporters on Capitol Hill and elsewhere about his predecessor’s history.

In a 7-0 vote, the commission agreed to send the request for a name change to the Federal Aviation Administration. The proposed name is Harry Reid International Airport.
The FAA has the authority to approve the name change and will analyze the request, according to the
Las Vegas
Review-Journal.
Reid, 81, is a longtime Nevada public official who became US Senate majority leader in 2007.
