For Hampstead, growth coming too fast for residents

As eastern Pender County continues to grow, a group of developers made plans for hundreds of people to become new neighbors with an apartment complex, but there’s Hampstead residents who believe their community is becoming too crowded.
The idea for Headwaters Apartments is one of several development goals making growth inescapable for the unincorporated community between the beach towns of Topsail Beach and Surf City. Hampstead is also considered part of the greater Wilmington area, which also continues to swell.
During a recent meeting hosted by the Pender County Board of Commissioners, nearby homeowners were invited to listen to a rezoning request, which could have been another step to move forward. Residents expressed concerns regarding the proposed project for the east side of U.S. 17 between the intersection of Hughes Road and Deerfield Drive. ....

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. (WECT) - The shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline has caused panic among some residents in the Cape Fear region.
Towns and the counties in the area have released statements in response to the unusual circumstances. Kure Beach, Burgaw and Pender County each released statements on Tuesday.

PENDER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - A Pender County teacher is suing the school board and other district leaders, claiming they ignored warning signs and failed to act prior to a student allegedly assaulting her in the classroom in 2018.
The suit, filed on April 9 by Kimberly Burns-Fisher, who is an eighth-grade language arts teacher at Topsail Middle School, names the Pender County Board of Education, Superintendent Steven Hill, and former Topsail Middle School Principal Anna Romero-Lehrer as defendants. ....

Pender County hires Tommy Batson as emergency management director

Pender County has named Tommy Batson as its emergency management director, according to a news release.
Batson, a Pender County native, started his public service career more than 24 years ago as a volunteer firefighter, officials said in the release. He started his role as emergency management director on March 28.
“As I take over as Director for Pender County Emergency Management, I plan to maintain and improve the capability of the department in successfully working relationships to prepare for, respond to, and mitigate from all-hazards related emergencies and disasters,” Batson said in the release.
He most recently has served as the county’s fire marshal and assistant emergency management director. Batson started his career with Pender County as a part-time telecommunicator in its 911 center. ....
