Phoenix Police Department
The Phoenix Police Communications Bureau s original location is at headquarters. A second center is located with the Property Management Bureau downtown.
A Phoenix 911 operator who recently recovered from COVID-19 has died after returning to work. And now the city is investigating how it handled overtime in her case. Pamela Cooper’s story is part of a larger issue about who is answering 911 operators’ calls for help.

Four days after Pamela Cooper was rushed to the hospital, Councilwoman Betty Guardado said this: “Pamela’s shift should have been 10 hours but because of the chronic understaffing she was forced to stay for 15 hours.” ....

Phoenix provides funding for as many as four new homeless shelters

Phoenix soon may have more shelters for people experiencing homelessness thanks in part to the COVID-19 relief funds provided to the city by the federal government.
In February, the Phoenix City Council voted to set aside $14 million in federal funds to purchase or improve up to four homeless shelters.
This is the first substantial financial commitment for new homeless shelters in recent years.
The shelter money will be awarded to nonprofits through a city application process later this year, but the council made clear that it would like to see smaller shelters committed to helping specialized populations  such as older adults, people with medical conditions or veterans. ....

Phoenix Council Members Want Details of Police Misconduct Probe

The Phoenix Police Department has been fiercely criticized in recent weeks for several incidents of misconduct.
Reporting this month from ABC15 revealed that Phoenix cops had passed around challenge coins that celebrate shooting a protester in the groin back in 2017. And the Maricopa County Attorney s Office dismissed a case earlier this month against anti-police brutality protesters who were falsely accused of being part of criminal street gang after it was revealed that police and prosecutors misled a grand jury with false and misleading statements and testimony. County Attorney Allister Adel has since announced that a retired judge would review the case for possible ethical violations. ....

Dark Money Rules Can't Stop Dirty Tricks in Phoenix Council Race

The race will decide whether Laveen Community Council member Cinthia Estela or climate nonprofit adviser Yassamin Ansari get to represent the city s most populous district, which stretches southwest from Roosevelt Row to Laveen. Both campaigns have invested heavily in their ground games, knocking on tens of thousands of doors in hopes of driving up engagement in what has been a traditionally low-turnout district, but with as many as a third of likely voters still undecided according to polling commissioned by the Ansari campaign and Estela winning the five-way primary by just 116 votes, the dark money attacks could make the difference between the two Democrats. ....
