As residents, home owners, and community members of San Luis Obispo County, we are upset, but not shocked, by the tragic hate crime perpetrated on the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity on the Cal Poly campus. The hate crimes on the campus are ongoing, a cyclical targeting of one group after another who claim individual and/or intersectional identities of female, Jewish, Muslim, Black, LGBTQ-plus, and non-majority identities.
It is common knowledge that a swastika is the symbol used to represent the Nazi party. The wider implications of the sign are terrifying and go far beyond symbolic signaling: Its use is a crime of the most severe degree against these individuals and our collective humanity. We call for local and federal authorities to treat this occurrence for what it is an ....

Southwestern Vermont Chamber hosts a digital night of celebration


Shires Strong Event Highlights and Celebrates Businesses in Southwestern Vermont

Vermont Business Magazine After a year that challenged even the best business owners and institutions throughout Vermont, the Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce hosted a night of celebration.
Titled “Shires Strong,” the Chamber’s annual membership meeting, promoted as the biggest night for businesses in the region, took place digitally on Wednesday January 27, 2021.
The digital event held on Zoom and co-produced by Catamount Access Television ran a little over an hour and focused on celebrating businesses and individuals that made an impact on the region in 2020.  The membership meeting, which happens every year in January to bring all the chamber members together, also introduced a 2021 budget for the organization which the membership voted on and passed.   ....

Philadelphia shootings: 8,500 people have been shot since 2015


One in an occasional series about Philadelphia’s unchecked gun violence.
Every trip outside the house for Jackee Nichols brings a new reminder of the pain.
Nichols is from a part of South Philadelphia that has been embroiled in a shooting conflict for as long as anyone can remember. In October 2018, that violence claimed her 15-year-old grandson. Police believe he was gunned down for living on the wrong block but, like most shootings in Philadelphia, no one has been charged in the crime.
Now Nichols faces the daily torment of living among the people she suspects killed her grandson, Rasul Benson, leaving trauma to resurface in unexpected moments. ....
