OCALA, Fla. – At the young age of 80, Mary Sue Rich left her post on the Ocala City Council after serving for 24 years. Rich was the first black woman to be elected to the position. She represented the Northwest Ocala district.
“I felt really good having a voice as a woman. The other council members always respected me and my ideas and answered any questions. They also tried to encourage me. We always served well together,” Rich said. ....

The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida suspended all in-person interviews in March in deference to health concerns arising from the global pandemic. At the same time, however, the program launched the Pandemic Oral History Project as a virtual research initiative in order to offer working-class people, elders and students in the Gulf South the opportunity to tell their own stories of survival, civic engagement and labor on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19.
As national health experts have demonstrated, African American and Hispanic communities have been grievously impacted by the global pandemic. The Pandemic Oral History Project spotlights community leaders serving racial and ethnic groups whose vulnerability to the newest coronavirus is exacerbated by histories of barriers to equal citizenship and lack of political representation. ....

VCC Approves Next Steps Toward Amendment 10

DeLand, FL - The dissolution of Volusia County s Revenue Division and the creation of a Treasury and Billing Division is another step in the transition as required by Florida Amendment 10. Volusia County Council members gave unanimous approval to ordinance 2020-19 which revises provisions within the code because of Amendment 10.  Assistant County Attorney Heather Wallace explained that besides changing the name of the division, it includes deletion of references to the Department of Public Safety,  the Elections Department, and the Property Appraisal Department.  Business Services Director Jeaniene Jennings handled other transition items on the agenda. The first was the approval of two supplemental agreements. One between the Airport and the Sheriff s Office and the other between the Sheriff s and Emergency Management with the helicopter.
