The Illinois House of Representatives has introduced House Bill 353, legislation that would amend the state’s minimum wage law by increasing the minimum wage to $20 per hour for essential workers for the duration of the COVID-19 public health emergency, effective immediately. Like most state legislatures, Rhode Island has spent substantial time in 2021 focused on economic concerns after a tumultuous 2020. Lawmakers in the Ocean State are spending a significant portion of their legislative session analyzing the state’s economic condition after an unforeseen plunge in tax revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to the financial hardships of the state, elected officials are also grappling with the financial struggles of their constituents. Following the financial roller coaster that was 2020, many state legislatures are beginning sessions reeling from budget deficits due to lost tax revenue because of the coronavirus-related recession. Because of the perilous economic situation, many states are considering quick fixes to address their budget problems, even though these so-called quick fixes would likely make matters worse over the long term. Maine lawmakers recently proposed a bill that would hike the state’s minimum wage. More specifically, House Bill 1279 proposes raising the state’s minimum wage from $7.50 per hour to $16 per hour, by January 1, 2025. If passed, HB 1279 would incrementally increase the Pine State’s minimum wage, beginning with an increase to $13 per hour on January 1, 2022. ....
