Park in Old Town Bluffton dedicated to Martin family
Martin Family Park was named in honor of longtime Bluffton altruists Ida and Jacob Martin.
The 1.47-acre parcel at 68 Boundary St., was acquired by the town in October 2016. The spot in the heart of Bluffton s historic district is now a large greenspace with benches and an accompanying parking lot.
Ida Martin is known locally for founding a pair of charitable staples: Bluffton Self Help, founded in 1987, and the Historic Campbell Chapel AME Church Soup Kitchen, founded in 2012 a year before her death at 90.
Martin was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2011 by President Barack Obama. The nation’s second-highest civilian honor recognizes Americans who perform “exemplary deeds of service.” In 1990, she was named South Carolina Volunteer of the Year.
