Sort out and still is not entirely sorted out. It was a city that was a long ways from anything, not served by railroads. Not until 1875 or so where we get regular train service. So, the city of seattle, Civic Leaders are very focused on economic development and on developing the waterfront facilities and sort of that subsistence mindset. Where we need to survive and get the city off the ground. There were a few attempts to add some refinements. There were a couple of parks added early on in the 1880s. But, in one attempt in 1892, to actually do a Parks System, you see the influence of the olmsted principles that early in seattle. The superintendent of parks at the time came up with a Parks System plan. It did not have the elegance of an olmsted plan. It was quite broad strokes. Perhaps, luckily, it did not get developed because the panic of 1893 hit. Of course, that hit the entire Country And Seattle was brought to a standstill by it. Jennifer ott is the author of olmstead in seattle creating a Park System for a modern city. She discusses the work of the olmstead brothers in seattle around the turn of the 20th century. The brothers were the sons of Frederick Law Olmstead noted Landscape Architect who designed, new york central park the national association for olmsted parks hosted the event and provided the video. All of the things just fell into place there was finally funding and so i am going to tell you the story of how we took that luck and turned it into a Park System.
