Lawrence police arrested Katroy D. Jenkins, 27, around 3 p.m. Sunday on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder after responding to a call at Burcham Park, which is located northwest of downtown Lawrence along the Kansas River. Patrick Compton, a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department, said officers found a 46-year-old woman had been “cut with a sharp object.” The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries, but they were not considered to be life-threatening, Compton said. ....

Staff Report The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has identified a woman who was struck by a train in Lawrence earlier this month. The woman was severely injured after being hit by a train near Second and Indiana streets, near Burcham Park, around 11:25 p.m. Jan. 13. Despite first responders’ attempts at lifesaving measures, she died at the scene, the Journal-World previously reported. The woman was Erica L. Puckett, 36, whose last known address was in Overland Park, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jenn Hethcoat said via email Tuesday. Hethcoat said Puckett’s family had been notified. The death investigation was still pending Tuesday as the sheriff’s office awaited the results of the coroner’s report, though it is “not being investigated as a suspicious death at this time,” Hethcoat said. ....
East Lansing Reducing Deer Population If you live near or in East Lansing, here is something you need to be aware of. They will be closing city parks at different times in the days to come through March 1st. It will also be illegal to be in those parks those times, not to mention dangerous. Fox47news.com reports that the reason they will be doing this is to cull the local deer population. This is the city s first population reduction attempt. Under an agreement with USDA wildlife services: Biologists trained in the use of firearms will kill up to 50 deer total in Abbot Road Park, the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center/Softball Complex, Harrison Meadows Park, Henry Fine Park, White Park, Burcham Park and Patriarche Park. ....
