The Vanden High team members are seniors Diana Egan, Faith Miller, Lucas Morales, Annika Serrano, Alex Melendres and Jelly Caraballo; juniors Nina Schmidt and Nihal Grewal; and sophomore Sydney Haas.
The Solano County Office of Education hosted the decathlon, which attracted 240 students from 15 high schools in Solano, Alameda, Contra Costa, Imperial, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma and Yolo counties.
“Academic Decathlon fosters a deep respect for knowledge, cooperation and self-esteem for students. This competitive event stimulates academic achievement and honors ‘athletes of the mind’ while providing an enriching educational experience with an emphasis on personal growth,” Solano County Superintendent of Schools Lisette Estrella-Henderson said in a statement released by her office Monday. ....

East Bay filmmaker Ralston Louie dies in swimming pool accident

In his documentary short films, Ralston Louie loved to break down stereotypes about the Chinese American experience in the 21st century. That was his own life story, which sharply contrasted his deep  Shanghai/Cantonese family traditions with his resume as a multi-sport athlete at Piedmont High School, a varsity soccer player at Williams College, a skier and a triathlete in training.
On the morning of Jan. 31, Louie drove from his parents’ home in Piedmont to Pacifica so he could surf. Later in the day, he went to his sister’s apartment complex in Oakland to spend his usual two hours swimming laps in an unheated outdoor pool. Around 1 p.m., a passing resident spotted something at the bottom of the pool and jumped in. Louie was rushed ....

APS votes to change names of Grady High, Brown Middle schools

ATLANTA - After months of deliberating on a new name for Grady High School, Atlanta Public Schools has voted to change the name to Midtown High School.
The Midtown  option was the clear frontrunner for students, with more than 61% of the votes. Other names floated included Piedmont High and Ida B. Wells, after the well-known African American journalist.
The school was named for Henry W. Grady, the 19th-century Atlanta newspaper editor who advocated for a “New South” after the Civil War but also campaigned against equality for freed slaves. ....

Alan Ripple Johnston passed away on Nov. 1, 2020 at the home of his daughter Julia, after final wishes and respects were paid by his loving family.
Alan was born in San Francisco on May 24, 1928 to Alan H. and Doris R. Johnston, both hard-working descendants of Midwest families, from whom he acquired a strong work ethic.
As a sixth-grader, Alan rode his bike to the town square every afternoon to meet the streetcar that carried the newspapers he would deliver that day.
When he was in middle school and high school, his parents promoted his interest in nature and the outdoors, by arranging for summer work at Lake Tahoe as a guide at a horse outfitting  and packing ranch. ....
