As such, she gives unique meaning to the term multi-talented. “Music and theater are in my DNA,” she explained. “With a mother who was a classically trained pianist, teacher, and church musician, a father who played jazz and regularly played in dance bands, was a solo artist, as well as singing in the church choir, a sister who was a church musician, and played or directed many musicals, how could this not be part of who I am?” Wise was born and raised in Zanesville, graduated from Zanesville High School in 1976, then Otterbein with a degree in music education in 1980. She earned a master’s in education from Muskingum in 1995. She started on her Ph.D. at Ohio University but was sidetracked when her father passed away and she “decided it was more important to take care of my mom who was in her late 70s at the time than to finish my degree.” ....

WHIZ News Rotary announced Phoenix Award winners MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio- The Rotary Club held its annual Phoenix Awards this morning. Eight local high school students were chosen and awarded with a $1,000 scholarship towards their future education and advancement. “It’s a way for us to celebrate kids that have overcome perseverance through all kinds of different adversities in their lives… Who have managed to get beyond that, find success in their life and achievement and be able to become strong adults and succeed in life,” Phoenix Awards Committee Chair Mike Snode said. Staring at a child at Journey Home Foster Care and Adoption Center, Karee tried to comfort the frustrated child. The girl, with furrowed eyebrows and crossed arms, told Karee, You just don t get it. Well, I actually do, Karee recalls telling her. Karee herself spent the majority of her childhood in the foster care system, bouncing between homes in the Zanesville area and surrounding counties from infancy until she was adopted at age 14. It became her passion to give foster children the best, most normal life possible while growing up in an unstable, sometimes traumatic setting.
