Oak Harbor girls notch 11th SBC title in row; Rockets narrowly topple Huron for boys crown

PORT CLINTON For the 11th year in a row, the Oak Harbor girls track team has won a league championship. The Rockets won the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division, finishing with 166 points.
Margaretta was second with 124 points, followed by Edison (116), Huron (113), Willard (71) and Port Clinton (47).
“I think all year long they felt a little pressure from Huron and Margaretta. In our eyes, it was going to be a really close meet. They were really making us wonder if we could win this year,” said Oak Harbor coach John McKitrick. “This senior class didn’t want to be the ones that lost the streak. Everybody did their job.” ....

OAK HARBOR After losing a key league game to Huron, Oak Harbor rebounded and rallied to defeat Bellevue, 53-38. In the process, the Rockets helped its coach, Eric Sweet, earn his 100th career victory.
The Rockets (9-7) fell behind 13-7 after the first quarter, but bounced back to take a 22-20 lead into the half. They held a 33-27 lead after three quarters and put the game away by outscoring the Redmen, 20-11, in the fourth.
“We fixed a couple of things defensively, we were rotating a little slow, we weren’t as active as I wanted us to be,” said Sweet. “We talked about some small changes, and the guys were able to execute, get a little more aggressive. Some good offensive possessions helped us to open up a lead in the second half.” ....

OAK HARBOR In the biggest game of the season, Oak Harbor answered the call to defeat Willard, 50-43, and earn a spot atop the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division standings.
The Rockets (8-6, 6-1 SBC Bay) held off a late rally by the Crimson Flashes for the win. Oak Harbor led 40-34 after three quarters and Willard (10-5, 5-2) got within one point at 44-43 before committing some costly turnovers. Blake Booker and T.J. Hallett hit four free throws in the final 32 seconds as the Rockets slowly pulled away. ....

City Attorney files civil action after NYE revelers hurt in balcony collapse in Miramar warehouse

SAN DIEGO
The San Diego City Attorney’s office on Friday filed a civil action against both the owner and organizer of a Miramar warehouse where a balcony collapsed under the weight of dancing New Year’s Eve partygoers, leaving three injured.
The case, filed in San Diego Superior Court, alleges warehouse owner Bradley Murray, party organizer Charles Clayborne Smith Jr. and Smith’s company Sindicate Entertainment Group and others maintained a public nuisance, engaged in unfair competition, and violated the city’s municipal code.
The city wants a temporary restraining order and injunctions prohibiting the defendants from continuing to host events in violation of city codes. In particular the lawsuit notes that the New Year’s Eve party violated county and state orders preventing large gatherings, done in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, which is raging in Southern California. ....
