For coach Angie Mellencamp, the key to success for her Seymour gymnastics team this winter is to stay away from injuries and COVID-19.
“As long as everyone stays healthy, that is the key more so than ever this year,” she said this week while preparing her team for its opening match at 10 a.m. Saturday at Columbus East.
“It is extremely difficult to get quarantined for two weeks in the middle of the season in this sport. That will take a toll on the girls,” she said.

Familiar Faces / East gymnasts return entire postseason lineup
The good news for the Columbus East gymnasts is that all of their significant varsity contributors from last year are returning this season.
The bad news for the Olympians is that like most other athletic teams, their practice time has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nancy Kirshman, who enters her 48th year as East coach, said a consistent practice routine is essential for gymnasts.
(The pandemic) has affected everybody, and it just puts us behind, Kirshman said. We are a little behind where we would be at this time of year, but we’re pushing forward. Time is not on your side. Gymnastics is not a sport where you can take two weeks off and come back and take two weeks off and come back. If they would shut us down for any length of time, it’s devastating for our sport. ....

GREENFIELD The start wasn’t what the New Palestine Dragons had hoped for, but the final result was precisely what they envisioned.
Fueled by an 18-point second quarter and the hustle play of senior Addi Jones, the Dragons manufactured a 15-2 run to break an early six-all tie and defeated Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Greenfield-Central, 47-28, on Thursday night.
Jones finished with a double-double behind 10 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Rachel Kelley had a team-high 11 points off the bench to lock down the Dragons’ fifth straight win and fourth consecutive against an HHC opponent. ....

The first week of the women’s basketball season couldn’t have been much bigger for Ashlyn Huffman.
The senior from Columbus North scored 53 points in two games for Cedarville (Ohio) to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her college career. She was subsequently named Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Player of the Week and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Player of the Week.
“Those were incredible honors,” Huffman said. “We play in a very good conference. It’s been a really neat week, and I’m excited to play the rest of the season.” ....
