Young Seymour gymnasts have coach optimistic 1/1/21 3:34 AM For coach Angie Mellencamp, the key to success for her Seymour gymnastics team this winter is to stay away from injuries and COVID-19. “As long as everyone stays healthy, that is the key more so than ever this year,” she said this week while preparing her team for its opening match at 10 a.m. Saturday at Columbus East. “It is extremely difficult to get quarantined for two weeks in the middle of the season in this sport. That will take a toll on the girls,” she said. Familiar Faces / East gymnasts return entire postseason lineup The good news for the Columbus East gymnasts is that all of their significant varsity contributors from last year are returning this season. The bad news for the Olympians is that like most other athletic teams, their practice time has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nancy Kirshman, who enters her 48th year as East coach, said a consistent practice routine is essential for gymnasts. (The pandemic) has affected everybody, and it just puts us behind, Kirshman said. We are a little behind where we would be at this time of year, but we’re pushing forward. Time is not on your side. Gymnastics is not a sport where you can take two weeks off and come back and take two weeks off and come back. If they would shut us down for any length of time, it’s devastating for our sport. ....
