HUDSON â The St. Croix County Board showed its support for expanding Medicaid as part of the Wisconsin state budget in a 15-3 vote.Â
The motion was mainly about taking a symbolic stand, as the budget is currently on the governorâs desk awaiting approval.Â
That stand is still an important one to take, Economic Support Administrator Ronda Brown said.Â
The expansion would have the state accept an additional $1 billion in new federal funding for the next two years, in addition to $635 million Wisconsin would already receive by becoming a Medicaid expansion state. An approval of the expansion would mean increased behavioral health services in the county and across the state. It would allow for a great focus on preventative care rather and wellness management, rather than reactive care, Brown said.Â
The approved priorities are health insurance, employee compensation, new positions and operating expenses.
Supervisor Bob Long said while he agreed with the importance of supporting county employees, he questioned whether health insurance and competition should be prioritized first. Long said critical services to citizens should take precedence from a budgeting standpoint.
âThatâs why we re here, isnât it? The county exists to serve our citizens,â Long said.
Supervisor Scottie Ard said the excellent service and response county residents receive is because of the exceptional staff. The way to retain that staff is with a competitive wage and excellent benefit package. Like the question of the chicken or the egg, Ard said in this case the staff comes first.

HUDSON Nearly a year after the first confirmed COVID-19 case in St. Croix County, the area is coming down from a peak but is still seeing accelerated spread.
Since the first case was confirmed on March 19, 2020, the county has seen 7,961 COVID infections as of March 2.
The county has had 47 deaths from the disease.
