Vadodara: Mini forests are coming up in different corners of the city as Japanese Miyawaki forest style is gaining popularity in Vadodara. Last year, the Society for Clean Environment (SOCLEEN) with the support of Vadodara’s forest department had taken up the project of developing Vadodara’s first Miyawaki forest and medicinal plant garden at a private farm on Sun Pharma Road. While within four months, the Chawla farm has become home to more than 60 types of native species of3,500 plants, another mini forest has come up at Rajivnagar sewage treatment plant (STP) site of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) at Harni. ....

VADODARA: About 24 black-headed ibis were found dead in a lake in Dabhasa village of Padra taluka on Thursday afternoon. Locals said that the birds started falling dead in the lake spreading panic in the area. Volunteers of Wildlife Rescue Trust (WRT) reached the spot and began fishing out the dead birds. “We immediately informed the forest officials and handed over the bird carcasses to them. There were no injury marks on the birds,” said Arvind Pawar of WRT. The birds have been sent for post-mortem and their samples too have been collected to ascertain if they were infected with bird flu. ....

A dairy farmer named Arvind Luhar had to give up his buffalo on January 22 as he could not repay a loan of Rs 15,000 to his distant relative Bhera Luhar, who lives in Karjan town. He wanted the money to go to Africa but couldn’t repay as he could not earn enough in the last one year due to the pandemic. But in an ultimate display of loyalty to Arvind, the animal did not allow Bhera to milk. Bhera, his sons Kalyan and Baldev cajoled the buffalo and tried every known trick for two days, but the buffalo just refused to give in. ....
