Chilima racing against time on 'taskforce,' Storms Eastern Region

Workaholic and vibrant Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima is running out of time on the ‘taskforce business’ and he has engaged an extra gear to speed up progress.

Fresh from the northern region, the firebrand politician, Chilima is this week operating from the eastern region holding progress reviews of Public Sector Reforms in District and Municipal Councils as well as inspecting public projects.
However, besides this schedule Chilima will also be finding time to Chair the Public Service Systems Review Taskforce which is racing against the 90 day deadline.

Chilima Applauds Eastern Region Councils On Reforms

Mangochi, April 27, Mana: Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima has applauded eastern region districts councils on the implementation of public services reforms.
He said local authorities in the east have shown a lot of commitment and progress singling out Balaka as best implementer on public service reforms.
Chilima made the remarks in Mangochi Monday where he met officials from four councils namely, Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi district and Mangochi Municipal.
The Vice President singled out Balaka as one the council that was way above the rest in the implementation of the public sector reforms. ....

EQUALS project to improve sciences in Malawi schools

Some secondary schools in the country which operate without science laboratories are looking up to the Equity with Quality and Learning at Secondary (Equals) Project for help to have the facilities soon.
Equals aims to improve quality of science and mathematics instruction in community day secondary schools (CDSSs) and increase access to secondary education in selected remote areas.
It is a 6-year Government of Malawi project under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, supported by the World Bank through an IDA credit facility of US$90million.
However, a tour of Nchalo CDSS and Dzumila Secondary School in Chikwawa District, Mphande CDSS in Mwanza District and Chiyendausiku CDSS in Balaka District–established that science laboratories have not been built since the Equals project rolled out about two years. ....

CAVWOC engages peer leaders in SRHR uptake, drug and substance abuse

Centre for Alternatives for Victimized Women and Children, (CAVWOC) over the weekend engaged peer educators in Balaka, in Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, as well as drug and substance abuse, in a two days conference that took place in Liwonde.
Speaking at the end of the two days conference, Sunday, Project Officer for CAVWOC under her Future Her Choice Project, Khumbolane Nyirenda, said they thought of bringing the peer educators together to empower them to lead their fellow youth.
She said the youth needs to have all rounded knowledge in SRH rights as it is the mandate of their project.
She said: âThe project is working in Traditional Authority Amidu and Kalembo, and we need the youths to be equipped in so many issues, be in mental health, menstrual hygiene, adolescent and child pregnancies, gender based violence, just to mention a few. ....

SRWB upbeat to solve water problems with K28bn loan from European Investment Bank

Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) says it will address water challenges in some parts of the Southern Region when with a loan of about K28 billion from the European Investment Bank.
SRWB unable to meet the demand and people are facing problems in accessing potable water.
SRWB said they will have water systems upgrading to meet the growing demand starting with Balaka District and Machinga, in particular Liwonde, where people are facing problems in accessing potable water.
The loan was approved by parliament during its recent mid year budget review meeting.
Through the loan, SRWB will borrow about K28 billion from EIB to upgrade the water system so that people in the two districts have access to reliable water supply but also for the board to supply to more people. ....
