Canada airs concern over China's actions in South China Sea

As the world commemorates the fifth anniversary of the Arbitral Tribunal ruling on the South China Sea, Canada has expressed its concern over China’s “escalatory and destabilizing actions” in South China and the East China Sea as it called on all parties to comply with the international court’s decision that soundly rejected Beijing’s excessive nine-dash line claim as without basis.

In a statement on Monday, the Global Affairs of Canada described the July 2016 Arbitral Award as a “significant milestone” and a useful basis for peacefully resolving disputes in the South China Sea. ....

CAVWOC engages peer leaders in SRHR uptake, drug and substance abuse


Centre for Alternatives for Victimized Women and Children, (CAVWOC) over the weekend engaged peer educators in Balaka, in Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, as well as drug and substance abuse, in a two days conference that took place in Liwonde.
Speaking at the end of the two days conference, Sunday, Project Officer for CAVWOC under her Future Her Choice Project, Khumbolane Nyirenda, said they thought of bringing the peer educators together to empower them to lead their fellow youth.
She said the youth needs to have all rounded knowledge in SRH rights as it is the mandate of their project.
She said: “The project is working in Traditional Authority Amidu and Kalembo, and we need the youths to be equipped in so many issues, be in mental health, menstrual hygiene, adolescent and child pregnancies, gender based violence, just to mention a few. ....

SRHR, key to achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) by women and girls is key to gender equality and empowerment and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mrs Georgina Aberese-Ako, the Upper East Acting Regional Director of the Department of Children, has said.
She said if the sexual and reproductive health needs of individuals particularly women and girls were met it would empower them to be more assertive, improve upon family and community wellbeing, boost economic gains and save the lives of women and children.
She noted that it would enhance safe sexual life leading to the prevention of teenage pregnancies among adolescents, curb sexual and gender-based violence, and the spread of HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). ....

Stakeholders in Upper East resolve to end child marriage
Stakeholders in selected districts of the Upper East Region have resolved to end teenage pregnancies and child marriages in their jurisdictions.
They said socio-cultural practices, ineffective communication among parents and children, lack of family planning, and parental irresponsibility were major causes of teenage pregnancies and child marriages in their areas.
The stakeholders comprised traditional and religious leaders, Assembly Members from three districts, Bongo, Talensi, and Nabdam.
They made the call at a forum organized by the Regional Coordinating Council with funding support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Global Affairs of Canada. ....
