1861 Aid to the Sandwich Volunteers: Several of the citizens of this place (Barnstable) contributed liberally to the fund for the purchase of uniforms and equipment for the Sandwich volunteers, over $200 having been raised in the course of a few hours. Judge J. M. Day, and Hon. George Marston, subscribed $25 each, for this purpose. 1871 Decoration Day: One week from to-day is Decoration Day, and our Cape citizens should not let it pass without public observance. We are requested to call upon the citizens of Barnstable to meet at Liberty Hall, in Centreville, on Thursday afternoon next, at 3 o clock, to make arrangements for decorating the graves of our fallen heroes in the several villages, for having some appropriate public services at the Monument in Centreville, and for perfecting an organization that shall hereafter have the matter in charge. 1861 A Short and Efficient War: The war must be conducted efficiently, and expedition is a very strong part of efficiency. If there is any delay now, any holding back of money or men, any remissness by which forces and supplies are not at the places where they are wanted, when wanted, if a battle is fought and lost because something was not done in season, the consequences will be lamentable. (Note: Unfortunately, the Civil War was not a short war, as it lasted four years from April 1861 to April 1865.) 1871 Steamer Island Home arrived at Nantucket on Sunday week, from New York, where she has had machinery repaired, new paddles placed upon her wheels, and a mast put in on the forward deck. Strolling along, humming an Irish tune Jack Sheedy Upon a recent sunny Sunday afternoon, I had a yearning to don jacket and boots and pay a visit to the muddy terrain of a favorite tumbling creek. Spilling from a placid pond, over stone, under boulder, through culvert, the creek’s mumbling waters traveled beyond this kingdom of mossy ground and gnarly root toward a vast salt marsh nearby. And like the twisting and turning stream, I followed. After a long winter, there is something inspiring in this raw and rustic Cape Cod landscape – this salt marsh world of swaying grass – encouraging one to put pen to paper like some roving Irish poet: The sun’s light spills in golden streams, upon the bold, upon the meek; beauty arrives in mid-day dreams, through flaxen reeds by salt marsh creek. ....
