1861 The Southern Confederacy: With slow but sure steps, without passion, calmly, determinedly, six States have left the Union and formed a new Confederacy. It is of no use to deny the right of secession, and equally of no use to cry that there is no danger, and that the Union will be preserved. States have seceded and the Union is dissolved. 1871 A bark anchored off our bar on Sunday, during the storm. The Geo. Shattuck came down to her yesterday, but as she immediately left her assistance probably was not wanted. The bark got under weigh about noon, wind about N. W. (Note: The steamer Geo. Shattuck ran between Boston and Provincetown.) ....

We can never answer this question satisfactorily and definitively, until we learn to form a just estimate of the two sections of our country, which now appear on the verge of war. (Note: The Civil War began three months later with the attack on Fort Sumter.) 1871 Rev. H. F. Edes, of this village (Barnstable), lectured before the Yarmouth Institute last week. Subject – Thoreau. The lecturer, says the Register, professed himself an admirer of the genius and character of this remarkable man, and gave an interesting account of his life and a good analysis of his character, as illustrated in his writings. ....
Jack Sheedy: Early Files 1861 The Season and the Sleighing: Now that the winter is half through, we have just had our first snow in quantity sufficient for sleighing. Only about four inches in depth, we presume it will soon disappear again, and sleighs freighted with both old and young are busy in the enjoyment of it. (Note: Winter being “half through” was a case of wishful thinking since it was only mid-January at the time.) 1871 Pickerel are quite plenty in the ponds in this town. Several hundred weight were caught last week, and sent to the Boston market, where they sell for 10 cents per pound, net …The ponds in this vicinity are very low. Hathaway s ponds have lowered some two feet on a level within three months, and are still falling. ....
