Medford holds forum to combat racism, bring diversity to city

With the trial of a police officer charged with the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota and recent attacks on Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders in mind, Medford s Human Rights Commission hosted a video-conference community forum on race on April 7, a follow-up to one held last June.
“Much of what goes on around the country has filtered down to Medford,” Director of Diversity and Human Resources Neil Osborne said, partly in reference to bigotry directed at AAPI as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic originating in China. “In the middle of the pandemic things have changed, but, unfortunately, racism is a constant. This is an important conversation we need to have. It may be uncomfortable. It’s not meant to be uncomfortable but part of this experiment is hearing the experiences of your neighbor.” ....

Haynes was full of praise for the former
Geelong Falcons star, stating that the 18-year-old has made his presence felt early.
He said the highly-rated recruit has shown no signs of a
knee injury that derailed his 2019 campaign, crediting Bruhn’s commitment and preparation to its management.
“I think we found one in the rough at pick number 12, he’s a real mature young man for his age and is very calm under pressure,” Haynes told
The Breakfast Club.

Medford OKs changes to Main/South street traffic pattern

Neil Zolot / [email protected]
The long problematic intersection at Main and South streets is getting a face lift.
The Traffic Commission last week approved changes in the traffic pattern at the multi-road intersection and access ramps on and off Mystic Valley Parkway/Rte. 16.
“Doing nothing is not an option,” Police Chief Jack Buckley said during the Jan. 19 meeting. “It’s time to act in the interests of public safety.”
“Safety is of the utmost concern,” Traffic Engineer Todd Blake added. “We all know this is a high crash area.”
Improvements will include:
• South Street: vehicles may turn left or right onto Main Street, but will be restricted from traveling straight onto Interstate 93. ....

with the nation s education system rocked by a pandemic that led to the pause of a broad swath of standardized tests, some education leaders say it s time to rethink testing. (Timothy J. Gonzalez/Statesman-Journal)
When Diane DeBacker worked as state education commissioner in Kansas, educators talked often and openly about their schools’ standardized test scores.
Then, in 2018, she moved to Seattle, where everything was different.
“We didn’t stand in front of a board and talk about how our schools did,” said DeBacker, who worked as Seattle Public Schools’ top academic officer until earlier this month. “I was like, huh, we don’t lead with assessments in Seattle. That’s kind of comforting.” ....
