On Thursday night, in the home opener, Bauer swiped the biggest steal of his young career with Newton s boys basketball team leading by a single point and less than 20 seconds to play in the game. After the steal, Bauer took it to the bucket and his layup with 12.1 seconds to play sealed the 53-48 victory. ....
Move Right Junior Adam Mattes scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the second half to lead Newton past Oskaloosa on Friday night. He also had three rebounds and two steals. (Troy Hyde) OSKALOOSA â Newtonâs offense got better as the game went along against Oskaloosa on Friday night. The defense continues to be the teamâs strong suit as the Cardinal boysâ basketball team locked down the Indians during a 58-36 road win on Friday night. âWe played well defensively,â Newton coach Jason Carter said. âWe got lots of tips and were pretty active.â It took a while to get going offensively as the Cardinals led 8-6 after one quarter. But Newton (3-0 overall, 2-0 in the conference) scored at least 16 points in the other three periods to cruise to a third straight win. ....

(Troy Hyde) GRINNELL â Sophomore Jake Ingle told a teammate in the huddle during a timeout in the closing seconds of Newtonâs boysâ basketball game against Grinnell that he wanted the ball is his hands in crunch time. Ingle played in 14 games as a freshman last year and scored 27 points. On Tuesday, in the Cardinalsâ season opener against the Tigers, Ingle hit the two biggest free throws of his prep career and the pair of freebies helped send Newton to a 58-55 road win during Little Hawkeye Conference action. ....
