Newton boys hang on at home against Marshalltown

(Troy Hyde) Newton sophomore Brody Bauer has been the Cardinals spark plug off the bench in the first two games of the season. On Thursday night, in the home opener, Bauer swiped the biggest steal of his young career with Newton s boys basketball team leading by a single point and less than 20 seconds to play in the game. After the steal, Bauer took it to the bucket and his layup with 12.1 seconds to play sealed the 53-48 victory.

Newton boys stay unbeaten after win over Oskaloosa

(Troy Hyde) OSKALOOSA — Newton’s offense got better as the game went along against Oskaloosa on Friday night. The defense continues to be the team’s strong suit as the Cardinal boys’ basketball team locked down the Indians during a 58-36 road win on Friday night. “We played well defensively,” Newton coach Jason Carter said. “We got lots of tips and were pretty active.” It took a while to get going offensively as the Cardinals led 8-6 after one quarter. But Newton (3-0 overall, 2-0 in the conference) scored at least 16 points in the other three periods to cruise to a third straight win.

Newton boys sink Grinnell with late free throws

(Troy Hyde) GRINNELL — Sophomore Jake Ingle told a teammate in the huddle during a timeout in the closing seconds of Newton’s boys’ basketball game against Grinnell that he wanted the ball is his hands in crunch time. Ingle played in 14 games as a freshman last year and scored 27 points. On Tuesday, in the Cardinals’ season opener against the Tigers, Ingle hit the two biggest free throws of his prep career and the pair of freebies helped send Newton to a 58-55 road win during Little Hawkeye Conference action.
