Mayor throws support behind QLD's Olympic bid


Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey has put his support behind Queensland s bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games.
Cr Dempsey said he d previously met with former Lord Mayor Graham Quirk to put forward the Bundaberg Region s credentials as a training base and to host events.
It s fantastic that Queensland has taken a big step towards hosting the 2032 Olympic Games after news that our state has been identified as the preferred candidate, he said.
If the International Olympic Committee s executive board accepts the recommendation, Queensland s bid which was lodged in September 2019 by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, will see events held across the state.
 
I certainly believe we d provide an ideal venue for rowing, triathlon and sailing. ....

Arterial road to receive much needed upgrades from next week


A $3.5 million upgrade to one of Bundaberg’s busiest stretches of road will begin next week.
New asphalt, turning lanes and the widening of road shoulders are on the cards along Princess St and Bargara Rd with works expected to be complete by April.
The works come as part of the state government’s $50 billion infrastructure guarantee for Queensland.
Plans for the Princess St and Bargara Rd upgrades which will begin on Monday.
Transport and Main Roads identified more than 15,000 vehicles use the Princess St and Bargara Rd stretch every day.
Bundaberg MP Tom Smith said crews will work “day and night” to get the job done. ....

Mayor makes fresh call to Feds to commit to levee


Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey has joined the state government in calling on the commonwealth to commit to the Bundaberg East Flood Levee.
It comes as the business case for the levee has been completed and presented to the state government.
However, Hinkler MP Keith Pitt says the Deputy Prime Minister s department had not yet received the report.
Cr Dempsey said council was grateful the funds had been committed by the state government, but it was time for the feds to get on board by matching what was on the table.

TESTING PARADISE: Anchor trials at dam explained

The new crest on Paradise Dam is expected to be finished by next month and the anchor trials are progressing.
While the results aren’t in just yet, here’s what we do know.
CPB Contractors, the lead contractor for the Essential Works, has procured a specialist post-tensioned anchoring and drilling subcontractor to undertake the anchor trial works, according to the Sunwater’s January update on the trials.
The anchoring trial will test the capacity of the existing dam foundation/ground conditions to hold post-tensioned anchors; and potential settlement that could occur within weak foundation materials. ....

Australian local govt PR website given "news" status by Google, Facebook

SYDNEY, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Google and Facebook Inc have granted an Australian local government news provider status, drawing questions about the internet giants’ efforts to curate news media.
Bundaberg Council, a regional government, told Reuters a website it runs received classification as a Google “news source”, making it the country’s first local government with that accreditation.
That means a council-funded website containing only public relations content gets priority in Google News searches about the agriculture hub of 100,000 people, accompanied by a “news source” tag. Bundaberg also has the country’s only confirmed council-run Facebook page tagged as a “News & Media Website”. ....
