Our present pandemic economic crisis puts things in perspective. The cost of the required infrastructure is a bridge too far, in our 2021 economic climate. History has taught us that itâs the taxpayer who pays for the shortfall. Our present premier and lord mayorsâ bidding for the 2032 Games, cannot guarantee the burden of costs wonât be their legacy. They will be retired with healthy superannuations and benefits. The Gold Coast again wants the glory, even after the 2000 Games. South-east Queensland requires world-class infrastructure investment which doesnât presently exist. We donât need new taxes to pay for Queenslandâs pipedream vision, from which regional Queensland will not benefit. ....
Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey has put his support behind Queensland s bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games. Cr Dempsey said he d previously met with former Lord Mayor Graham Quirk to put forward the Bundaberg Region s credentials as a training base and to host events. It s fantastic that Queensland has taken a big step towards hosting the 2032 Olympic Games after news that our state has been identified as the preferred candidate, he said. If the International Olympic Committee s executive board accepts the recommendation, Queensland s bid which was lodged in September 2019 by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, will see events held across the state. Â I certainly believe we d provide an ideal venue for rowing, triathlon and sailing. ....
