The new changes can be implemented to either Escott s health authority rules, which require businesses, by law, to ensure customers and employees cover their faces while inside, or Austin Public Health s risk-based guidelines, which are not legal requirements but some aspects are enforced as part of the county’s health codes. Masks are still required in the city and in the county in public places, Escott clarified Friday, saying that, while he was surprised by the CDC s announcement Thursday, it wasn t completely unexpected. As the end of eviction moratoriums loom, Austin animal shelters are seeing an increase in the number of pet owners requesting to surrender their animals.
At Austin Animal Center, the city s shelter, more than 100 animals were on the waiting list to be surrendered as of Tuesday, said Jennifer Olohan, spokesperson for the center. At one point, the list was at 275 animals.
Olohan said pet owners are anticipating the end of eviction moratoriums, which began last year as the coronavirus pandemic led to job losses and furloughs across the country.
In April, Travis County Judge Andy Brown and Austin Mayor Steve Adler extended their eviction moratorium orders to last until Aug. 1. But starting June 1, Austin and Travis County landlords can issue a notice to vacate to residents who have not paid rent in five months or longer, and have exhausted all assistance remedies.
The CDC guidance still calls for wearing masks in crowded indoor settings such as buses, planes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, but it helps clear the way for reopening workplaces, schools, and other venues even removing the need for social distancing for those who are fully vaccinated.
