Austin pet owners make 'heartbreaking choices' amid housing uncertainty


As the end of eviction moratoriums loom, Austin animal shelters are seeing an increase in the number of pet owners requesting to surrender their animals.
At Austin Animal Center, the city s shelter, more than 100 animals were on the waiting list to be surrendered as of Tuesday, said Jennifer Olohan, spokesperson for the center. At one point, the list was at 275 animals.
Olohan said pet owners are anticipating the end of eviction moratoriums, which began last year as the coronavirus pandemic led to job losses and furloughs across the country.
In April, Travis County Judge Andy Brown and Austin Mayor Steve Adler extended their eviction moratorium orders to last until Aug. 1. But starting June 1, Austin and Travis County landlords can issue a notice to vacate to residents who have not paid rent in five months or longer, and have exhausted all assistance remedies. ....

Animal shelter staff put pets before themselves in Texas winter storm


Lucy Fernandez scrambled to create the emergency Facebook page for local pet owners and supporters on Valentine’s Day, when the city of Austin’s Animal Center had been closed to the public for months and bad winter weather, worse than most imagined, was on its way.
In a matter of hours, more than 1,000 strangers joined, often linking up by hashtag and ZIP codes, to get pet food, water and supplies to those nearby who posted a need.
Not long after, Fernandez and other employees at Austin Pets Alive, found themselves sleeping at a hotel, and then at the shelter itself  while trying to feed, medicate and clean up after dozens of shelter animals without water or power. ....
